Variants on BSL 101 – 20 hours
We are now offering BSL 101 units for young learners and people who work in healthcare or frontline staff such as the police and fire service, retail, hotels, restaurants and leisure centres. These can be studied on their own. Successful candidates can go on to complete units BSL102 and BSL103 to achieve the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.

Introduction to British Sign Language – 2 Hour
This introduction includes alphabet, numbers, fingerspelling, basic greetings signs and deaf awareness
5 Week Taster in British Sign Language – 10 hours
This course includes alphabet, fingerspelling, numbers, colours, greeting signs, time, feelings, basic conversations and deaf awareness or it can be tailored to your needs.
10 Week Taster in British Sign Language – 20 Hours
This course includes alphabet, fingerspelling, numbers, colours, greeting signs, time, feelings, food, jobs, animals, everyday conversations and deaf awareness or it can be tailored to your needs.
Level 1 Award in British Sign Language – 30 Hours
This qualification is designed to enable learners to communicate with deaf people in BSL on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use.
It provides an introduction to BSL and is suitable for all learners. There are 3 assessments in the form 1:1 basic conversation with your tutor on camera.
BSL101 – Introduction to BSL
Topics covered: meeting people, using numbers, weather, transport, and directions.
BSL102 – Conversational BSL
Topics covered: at home – people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests
and activities, and weather.
BSL103 – BSL at School, College or Work
Topics covered: getting around, exchanging information, refreshments, and using numbers.

Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language – 90 Hours
This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, participating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 1. The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routine and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine language tasks and have sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks. Candidates
are assessed by a combination of a multiple choice exam paper, a presentation, and a
conversation in BSL
BSL201 – BSL Receptive Skills
BSL202 – BSL Productive Skills
BSL203 – BSL Conversational Skills
There are four themes in this qualification: everyday conversation, eating and drinking,
shopping and spending, and travel and holidays. You will study the first theme everyday
conversation, and two from the remaining three themes.
